Traumatic brain injury car crash case settled for $700,000
On April 22, 2006, not even Richard Becht’s best defensive maneuvers could protect him from the reckless driving of another. The defendant was speeding eastbound on State Route 12 in Lewis County when she swerved to avoid hitting a car, lost control of her car and collided head-on with Richard’s. Richard’s injuries have changed his life forever.
“An act of simple disregard has all but ruined the life of Richard Becht,” said John Messina. “Too many people see speed limits as flexible guidelines. Tragic accidents like this one should not have to be the reminder that there are speed limits for an important reason.”
The accident left Richard with devastating injuries. Besides a complicated fracture of his left femur (the largest and strongest bone in the body) that required major surgery, a fractured collarbone, breastbone and rib, Becht also suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Diagnosing and treating TBIs are more complicated than almost any other type of injury because a TBI can not only physically debilitate the victim, but also cause long-term personality changes and emotional problems.
“Our lives were changed forever by this accident,” said Carole Becht, Richard’s wife.
The toll taken on his physical and mental state has also made Richard permanently and highly more susceptible to further injury. Richard will be recovering from the accident for the rest of his life. Messina Bulzomi Christensen was able to secure a $700,000 settlement for Richard that will aid in his recovery, provide for his care and help support his family.
